The CHRD (Centre for Human Rights and Development) has been awarded the “Asia Democracy and
Human Rights Award (ADHRS) 2014” by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD). The award
ceremony took place in Taipei, Taiwan on December 10, 2014 to coincide with the International Human
Rights Day. The award was handed by His Excellency the President of Taiwan, Ma Ying – Jeou and K.S.
Ratnavale, Director of CHRD received the award on behalf of the organization.
Each year, TFD presents this award to one individual or organization that has made significant
contributions to the advancement of democracy and human rights in Asia, and this year TDF has decided
to honor CHRD for the courage, leadership and vision of CHRD.
CHRD was chosen from a pool of 13 candidates from the region by a rigorous two-stage reviewing
process. This award to CHRD would serve to bolster human rights work in Sri Lanka. Many activists in the
country believe that for change to happen, it is necessary to have institutions, governments and
individuals in the Asia region supporting their work and speaking out for human rights and democracy.
CHRD believes that this award would send a clear message to communities and the government in Sri
Lanka that their neighbours in Asia want to see human rights restored and respected.
