Militarization and climate injustice in Sri Lanka: A call for accountability

2025-10-02

A recent report supported by the United Nations has validated the longstanding concerns of Tamil communities regarding the ongoing military occupation in the NorthEast. The report highlights that this occupation not only perpetuates postwar injustices but also significantly hampers climate resilience, threatens livelihoods, and compromises fundamental human security. The report finds that military control over fertile land, governmentsponsored colonization, and systemic marginalization in services like agriculture, education, and healthcare have left Tamil and Muslim communities in Batticaloa and Mullaitivu especially vulnerable to climate shocks.

Womenheaded households are disproportionately affected, facing predatory microloans, crop loss, and forced migration. Despite their historical suffering, these communities are now left to bear the compounded burden of militarization and climate insecurity.

Victim families and civil society organizations are calling on the international community to hold Sri Lanka accountablenot only for warera atrocities but also for these continuing structural harms that threaten intergenerational justice and survival.
