A felicitation ceremony was held for veteran translator and social activist S. Sivagurunathan, commonly known as Siva to honor his services for over 60 years at the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute Hall on August 29, 2024. The event coincides with his 80th birthday on 2nd September, 2024.
A book was launched titled in Tamil and Sinhala meaning Siva Integration of two languages. The publication comprises articles written by fellow activists and academics exploring Sivagurunathans social mission, life history, activism and social struggles as a trilingual translator, facilitator and advocate of leftist ideals.The book was compiled and edited by Jeewarathnam Suresh and was presented to Mr. Sivagurunathan and his dear wife by Sandya Priyangani Ekneligoda, Vinya Ariyaratne & Jehan Perera.
In addition, a commemorative stamp was released in honor of Sivagurunathan and a special first day cover was presented to him by Prof. Kshanika Hiriburegama, former Vice Chancellor, University of Colombo and former Chairperson, University Grants Commission.
Mr. Sivagurunathan was also presented with a plaque to honor his services towards reconciliation by fostering mutual appreciation between Sinhala and Tamil cultures.It is important to note that
S. Sivagurunathan has been one of the Board of Governors of the Centre for Human Rights and Development CHRD since inception. He has actively participated many CHRD activities as a translator and contributor.
