5 suspects arrested and served indictment in High court of Colombo

5 suspects who have been arrested in connection with the attempt to assassinate Member of Parliament M.A. Sumanthiran were served indictment in High court of Colombo on July 30, 2018.

These indictment charges were framed under the so-called Prevention of Terrorism act. While the case was pending in the Kilinochi Magistrate court the suspects filed bail application in Jaffna High court. On the 3rd day of the hearing judge of High court of Jaffna granted bail with heavy conditions for all 5 suspects.

On July 22, 2018 one suspect was released from the case by the Kilinochi Magistrate court. When the counsel for the accused made submissions to enlarge bail for all the remaining four suspects in the newly indicted case in Colombo High court, where they have been already granted bail in Jaffna High court on bail application.

The submission which was made by the counsel of the accused was strongly objected by the Attorney General department where they retorted according to PTA act sec. (1) where the suspects should be kept in remand until the trial is concluded. The Judge of Colombo High court also refused the bail application and the four suspects were remanded.
