Numerous human skeletal remains have been found in the ‘Lanka Sathosa’ compound as well as in the already excavated earth which is closer to the entrance to Mannar town. The excavation process commenced on May 28, 2018 and is expected to continue for over a week.
The excavation process is carried out under the inspection of Mannar Magistrate A.G. Alexraja. Excavation is being carried out by various groups which comprises a team of judicial medical officers which is led by consultant Judicial Medical Officer A.S. Rajapaksha as well as a team of forensic archeologists led by Professor Raj Somadeva of Kelaniya University. Members of Divisional Secretariat, District Secretariat, Road Development Authority, District Surveyors Department, Irrigation Department, crime scene officers as well as Urban Council members extended assistance.
In addition, attorneys at law V.S. Niranchan and Ranitha Gnanarajah and Dominic Premananth from CHRD too were present during the excavation process just as in the Mannar Thiruketheeswaram mass grave, watching the interest of the potential families of the disappeared.
It is apt to mention that during the excavation process large scale of human skeletal remains were found 7-Feet below the ground.
